Top pinots easy to find...
...and a pleasant surprise was a tidy little pinot from WA's Paul Conti. Conti is best known for his robust reds and quirky, slightly sweet fronti but this pinot sourced from his Manjimup vineyard is terrific. It's a cellar-door line and worth the trip to his home base in Wanneroo Road.
Expressive and deliciously varietal pinot noir from Conti's Manjimup vineyard. The aromas of light sour cherry and damp forest floor earthiness are wonderful. The palate is light to medium-bodied but immensely powerful. A most complete wine. 90/100

Semi translucent crimson colour with crimson hue. The nose is a very pleasant surprise displaying pronounced varietal character with dark cherry, spice and anise notes. The palate shows generous mouthfeel with an impressive power wave and strong flavours of dark cherry, spice and anise. Very fine tannins – perfect balance. Long aftertaste.
A great value varietal.

This is a relatively new addition to the wine from the Contis and is beginning to make headway in the pinot circles. Pinot is never an easy wine to master and some will say that you never get it right. That said, this offering of pinot shows some luscious characters. There are some usual suspects hanging around in the form of ripe berry fruits, wild strawberries and redcurrants, the integrated acidity holds the palate together and compliments the tannin structure and oak use. A really sound wine most Pinot followers will really enjoy.

If you haven’t associated pinot noir with the wines of Paul Conti, it’s probably because most of their pinot noir has, in the past, been exported to Japan. During the five years that winemaker Jason Conti has been making pinot noir, 90% has been exported to Japan and the balance sold at the cellar door.
In 1999 it was decided to source additional fruit from Manjimup and, on a blend of Manjimup and Carabooda fruit, make a pinot noir for general release. This is the result and it has loads of honest character. There is light cherry on the nose and the palate is rich with mature fruit, hints of peppery spice and chocolate. It is a rich, appreciably complex and rewarding wine that will be even better a year or so down the track.

Strong red-purple; the bouquet has clean, ripe dark plum fruit with plenty of concentration; the palate likewise, has impressive weight with lots of dark plum/cherry fruit with development potential. The only discordant note is the oak which seems heavy at this point, and I really wonder about the choice of oak type.
